Ekiden wants traders to keep supported assets while using them to back positions on Canton. Its October 20 application asks the Accountability Committee to recognise collateral-to-USDCx exchanges and a planned isolated-margin settlement model. Canton’s recognition rules determine how qualifying settlement activity counts toward network rewards. This is not regulatory approval of an investment product. The initial list includes USD1 and USDCx stablecoins, BENJI and USYC fund tokens, and the gold-backed eXAU token . These are assets being onboarded, not a list of five confirmed live collateral options. This is a different development from Ekiden’s addition of gold and silver markets . A trading market determines what price a position follows. Collateral is the property supporting that position. Offering a gold market does not, by itself, mean a trader can deposit a gold token to back it. Keeping an asset while using it as collateral Ekiden’s perpetual futures let traders take positions on an asset’s price without buying it outright. Orders are matched in an order book, with settlement on Canton. Losses and other obligations are still calculated in USDCx, a dollar-denominated stablecoin backed by USDC . Keeping that exposure also means keeping its price risk. An asset does not stop moving in value because it has been deposited to support another position. In a hypothetical example, 100 tokens at $10 each are worth $1,000. At $8 each, they are worth $800. The holding has lost $200 in market value, separately from any gain or loss on the trade it supports. This is not a margin or liquidation calculation. Illustrative prices, not an Ekiden margin calculation. Ekiden’s margin documentation explains how account backing is assessed. When collateral needs to be exchanged Ekiden’s application covers exchanging collateral for USDCx to meet an obligation, including when a position is forcibly closed or a withdrawal is requested with an unpaid balance. The collateral transfer and payment would settle together. Ordinary trades and deposits fall outside the recognition request. That is the purpose of atomic settlement : both sides complete, or neither does. It addresses the danger of handing over an asset without receiving the corresponding payment. It does not prevent the asset’s price falling before the exchange. What is changing, and what is not The request also covers an isolated-margin settlement flow still being implemented. Isolated margin assigns backing to individual positions. Ekiden’s current margin documentation instead describes cross margin: positions in the same Trading Account share a pool of backing. That distinction matters when judging how much an individual position can affect the rest of an account. Collateral choice and margin mode answer different questions: what backs the trade, and how that backing is shared. For Canton, this could make issued assets useful across more applications. That makes the collateral’s accepted value and ease of exchange just as important as the choice of market. Read Ekiden’s October 20 settlement-recognition application .
