Time of participant

Hi,

We recently received a question regarding the participant’s time, and we can’t find an answer to it in the documentation.

The question is: “Is the participant’s clock NTP-synced?”
This particular client has issues if there is a delay of more than 5 minutes, since if there is, they will refuse transactions that were prepared more than 5 minutes ago.

Canton does not sync the participant’s clock itself. The participant uses the system clock of the host it runs on (see the SYSTEM_CLOCK_RUNNING_BACKWARDS warning), and the preparation_time of a prepared transaction comes from that clock. So whether it is NTP-synced depends on the node operator. The docs ask to make sure NTP is running and synchronized on the validator host.
