This Canton Improvement Proposal (“CIP”) proposes to allocate Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC (“GS”) a Super Validator (“SV”) with Weight 10.
Given GS’s footprint in global capital markets and its foundational role in institutional blockchain adoption, its addition to the Canton Network may encourage increased institutional traditional finance adoption of Canton-native institutional products and services, as well as further encourage market participants to bring innovative use cases to the Network.
This CIP establishes an umbrella, milestone-based program through which the GS SV can receive SV Weight (up to 10) for initiatives intended to support the Canton ecosystem.
This program contains confidential commitments to the ecosystem. Those commitments and milestones have been agreed with the Tokenomics and Accountability Committees and may be made available to the public when the Canton Foundation and GS collectively determine whether it is appropriate to disclose them.
- Total Earnable Weight: 10 (max)
- Accrual Destination: Escrow, consistent with existing SV escrow mechanics.
- Confidentiality: The Accountability Committee will review the milestones and inform SVs if they have been met.
Motivation
GS is a leading global financial institution, providing a broad spectrum of services to corporations, governments, and financial institutions under its multiple business lines. GS is positioned as a valuable strategic partner to the network via their substantial experience in unifying blockchain technology with traditional finance institutions and its demonstrated commitment to Canton technology.
Allocation of an SV to GS will:
- Strengthen the alignment of tokenization services with large-scale institutional use cases pertaining to capital markets.
- Contribute to the relevant enhancements of the Canton Network, resulting in increased credibility and act as a catalyst for traditional finance institutional adoption of digitally native products on the Canton Network.
Deliverables & Milestones
The specific deliverables and milestones for GS have been agreed privately with the Canton Foundation. These will be reviewed by the Tokenomics and Accountability Committees on a confidential basis.
- Milestone Review Process: The Accountability Committee will confirm whether GS has successfully met each milestone.
- Reward Mechanism: Upon confirmation, rewards associated with milestones will be released from escrow.
- Confidentiality: GS’s specific commitments and timelines will remain confidential until the Canton Foundation and GS collectively determine whether it is appropriate to disclose them.
SV Reward Mechanics
-
An extra Beneficiary PartyID associated with the ‘escrowed’ Canton Coins for the GS SV will be setup by the Foundation, or the Foundation’s third-party service provider approved to provide SV rewards escrow services, with an SV Weight at the maximum earnable weight.
- The designated third-party vendor (on behalf of GS) is responsible for all infrastructure and operational costs associated with running GS SV node.
- GS SV node will NOT mint rewards on a block-by-block basis until milestones are delivered and approved.
- All rewards associated with the GS SV node allocated weight will accrue in the Unclaimed Rewards Pool until milestones are verified.
-
GS is required to present proof of successful completed milestones to the Tokenomics Committee
- GS (or its third party vendor on its behalf) will present a calculation for number of Canton Coin to be earned for meeting the requirements of the milestone.
-
If the Tokenomics and Accountability Committees agrees that the milestone has been met and agrees with the calculation, an announcement will be sent via the Tokenomics-Announce mailing List
- ⅔ of Super Validator Operators will then assign a portion of the Unclaimed Rewards, to result in being minted, to the designated third-party vendor (on behalf of GS’s) SV, based on the calculation approved by the Tokenomics Committee.
- ⅔ of the SV Operators will update their configurations to allow the GS SV node to host the full weight to be earned by it.
-
If any milestones are not achieved by the deadline
- Applicant (GS) will be notified they have not met a milestone by the Canton Foundation.
- Any unearned weight associated with the unachieved deliverable will be removed from the total SV weight.
- The Tokenomics Committee will make a recommendation to the SVs on what to do with the Unclaimed Rewards
