CIP-XXXX: Add a16z crypto as a Super Validator (Weight up to 10.0)

Title: Add a16z crypto as a Super Validator (weight up to 10.0)
    Author: Eric Saraniecki
    Status: Proposed
    Created: 2026-09-14

    Summary

This CIP proposes adding a16z crypto as a Super Validator on the Canton Network with a maximum earnable weight of 10.0.

a16z crypto is a venture capital fund that invests in crypto and blockchain startups, with a portfolio spanning market infrastructure, payments, stablecoins, consumer applications, and developer tooling. Its proposed participation would broaden the investment and industry experience represented in Canton’s Super Validator set.

    Motivation

Canton’s continued growth depends on connecting institutional financial infrastructure with the broader ecosystem of developers, applications, crypto-native businesses, and traditional capital markets businesses. This requires participation from organizations that understand both how decentralized networks develop and how emerging technologies achieve commercial adoption.

a16z crypto brings a differentiated perspective to the Super Validator set through its experience investing in and supporting companies across the crypto ecosystem. Its portfolio and broader network span foundational infrastructure, financial services, payments, stablecoins, consumer products, and developer platforms.

a16z crypto has deep subject-matter expertise across cryptography, distributed systems, mechanism design, security, governance, and blockchain infrastructure. This expertise can provide a valuable perspective as Canton evolves.

The proposed structure recognizes this potential value through measurable and independently verifiable network outcomes, aligning Super Validator weight with demonstrated value to the Canton ecosystem.

    Deliverables & Milestones

The specific deliverables and milestones for a16z crypto have been agreed upon privately with the Canton Foundation’s Tokenomics and SVAC Committees.

    • Milestone Review Process: The SVAC will confirm whether a16z crypto has successfully met each milestone.

    • Reward Mechanism: Upon confirmation, rewards associated with milestones will be released from escrow.

    • Confidentiality: a16z crypto’s specific commitments, timelines, and commercial details will remain confidential until the Foundation and a16z crypto determine it is appropriate to disclose them.

    SV Mechanics

    • An extraBeneficiary PartyID associated with the ‘escrowed’ Super Validator will be setup by the Foundation, or another SV node operator approved to provide SV rewards escrow services, with an SV Weight at the maximum earnable weight.

      • The Applicant is responsible for coordinating the process of setting up the escrowed weights with the GSF and the operator of the SV node.

      • The Applicant is responsible for all costs associated with the operation of the representative SV

      • The representative SV will NOT mint rewards on a block by block basis

      • All representative SV rewards will go to the Unclaimed Rewards pool

    • If the Tokenomics Working Group and a16z crypto agree a milestone has been met and agree on the calculation of rewards, an announcement will be sent via the Tokenomics-Announce mailing list.

      • ⅔ of Super Validator Operators will then assign a portion of the Unclaimed Rewards to be minted by the Applicant’s Validator

      • ⅔ of the Super Validator Operators will update their configurations to allow Applicant to takeover a portion of their SV Weight on a go-forward basis

    • If any milestone and associated rewards are not achieve by the deadline:

      • Applicant will be notified they have not met a deliverable by the Foundation

      • Remaining SV Weight on the representative SV will be removed from the SV Operator configs

      • The Tokenomics Working Group will make a recommendation to the SVs on what to do with the Unclaimed Rewards
