Summary

Following the approval of the Canton dApp API Standard (CIP-0103), a preview version of the dApp SDK was released and is successfully being used by the Wallet Gateway. This proposal outlines a grant for Digital Asset to continue the core development required to deliver an open source company agnostic, production-ready dApp SDK and connectivity ecosystem. While foundational architecture is in place, significant core software engineering remains to build the production SDKs, develop turn-key UI components, abstract away differences between dApp API and direct Ledger API connections for Wallet SDK compatibility, and finalize security audits. We will deliver universal wallet discovery components, integrate Wallet Connect as a core capability, execute rigorous internal and external security audits, and build an automated compliance test suite. Beyond core engineering, this grant funds dedicated, hands-on integration support to drive widespread ecosystem adoption, explicitly targeting full CIP-103 compliance across the network's top-tier dApps and major wallet platforms. This ensures that the foundational work of CIP-103 transitions into a secure, mass-adopted reality.

Review Feedback — Canton dApp SDK and Tooling (Digital Asset)

Thank you for the submission and for continuing to contribute foundational infrastructure to the Canton ecosystem.

The committee recognizes this proposal as highly relevant and strategically important, particularly given its direct alignment with CIP-0103 and its role in enabling a standardized, interoperable dApp and wallet ecosystem. The focus on open-source, vendor-neutral infrastructure and security audits is strong and clearly aligned with Development Fund objectives.

That said, there are several areas that should be strengthened before the proposal can move forward:

1. Adoption milestones are strong, but need clearer linkage to funding

This proposal is one of the few that meaningfully incorporates adoption-based milestones, particularly in Milestone 4 (dApp and wallet adoption targets). This is strongly aligned with Development Fund expectations.

However, we recommend:

More clearly tying earlier milestone payments (M1–M3) to intermediate adoption or usage signals where possible
Clarifying how progress toward Milestone 4 adoption targets will be tracked throughout the project lifecycle

This will help ensure funding is consistently tied to ecosystem impact, not just technical delivery.

2. Evidence of demand should be made more explicit

While the proposal references existing usage (e.g., Wallet Gateway) and ecosystem alignment, it would benefit from clearer articulation of current and expected demand, including:

Which dApps and wallets are expected to adopt CIP-0103
Any commitments, timelines, or coordination already in place
How “top-tier dApps” are defined and identified

This is a Tier 1 consideration for funding decisions.

3. Cost and scope require additional context

The requested funding (8,170,000 CC) is significantly larger than other proposals and covers a broad scope (SDK development, UI components, audits, ecosystem integration, and adoption support).

The committee would benefit from:

A clearer breakdown of effort across engineering, audits, and DevRel/adoption work
Justification for cost relative to scope and expected ecosystem impact
Clarification on which components are net-new vs. extensions of existing work

4. Maintenance and ownership clarity

The proposal notes that maintenance will transition to an existing maintenance grant, which is helpful. However, additional clarity would strengthen this section:

What level of ongoing support is guaranteed post-grant
How community contributions will be managed
Whether governance of the SDK remains neutral and ecosystem-driven

It is not clear whether this milestone is referring to general CIP-103 adoption or is it specifically referring to the use of SDK, etc developed as part of this proposal.

The wording suggests that irrespective of the usage of the SDK, if the top dApps and wallets support CIP-103, then the milestone is achieved.

@dfordivam the milestone refers to CIP-103 adoption, which at the end it is what drives value to the network. All the work on the dApp SDK is focused on making adoption faster and broader across wallets and dApps

The wording suggests that irrespective of the usage of the SDK, if the top dApps and wallets support CIP-103, then the milestone is achieved.

@dfordivam at this stage, we are actively working with several wallets and dApps, helping them implement, guiding integrations, and debugging issues. So far, only Wallet Gateway and WalletConnect have adopted CIP-103

Reviewing from the sigilry side - Send built its own CIP-103 client (sigilry/sigilry), so our skin in this is in spec-coherence more than in this specific SDK shipping. Send advised on the original CIP-103 itself, but not to this proposal's design.

What I like

Migration story is the clearest deliverable in the proposal. Wallet SDK abstraction in M2 plus first-class WalletConnect in M1 means existing dApps don't need to rewrite to gain CIP-103 connectivity.
Audit cadence makes sense. Internal at M1, external at M3, ~20% of budget reserved for security and compliance.
Maintenance handoff is concrete. Section 4 names the 2026 Wallet Kernel Maintenance Grant (#50, merged) as the post-grant home, under Splice / Hyperledger Labs.
Adoption metrics measure outcomes. Committed / WIP / Compliant lifecycle plus a per-milestone Adoption Progress Report is the right shape. (See M4 below.)

Concerns

M2 compliance test suite needs multi-implementer governance. Same team writes the SDK and the suite that defines what "CIP-103 compliant" means. Two risks: suite-encoded behaviors become compliance requirements without going through CIP governance, and M4's wallet acceptance is conditional on passing the suite (line 113), so the suite-author has financial skin in its calibration. Ask: M2 acceptance should require a multi-implementer review path - a working-group seat for at least one alternative implementer, change control under a neutral home (canton-foundation/cips or comparable). DA still authors; change control sits with the implementations that have to pass it.
+1 to @hythloda on budget breakdown. The 84e6037 iteration added the 80/20 narrative and the maintenance section, but 80/20 alone is too coarse for an 8.17M CC ask. A headcount x duration table per milestone plus a separate audit line would let the ask be reviewed on substance.

Open questions

+1 to @dfordivam on the M4 measurement gap. @joel-da's reply ("the milestone refers to CIP-103 adoption, which at the end it is what drives value to the network") confirms the gap - the SDK can underperform and M4 still hits. Could M4 tighten to "80% of top-15 dApps adopt CIP-103 via this SDK or a CIP-103-conformant alternative that passes the M2 compliance suite"? Keeps the spirit, ties payment to the funded work.
License? Section 4 places the work under the Splice umbrella but doesn't name a license. Apache-2.0 by convention?
Public RFC for the SDK API surface before M1? Section 1.2 mentions active discussions with leading dApps and wallets. A thin design doc would let dApp builders outside that conversation review the shape before v1.0, and reduce late-feedback churn.
M1 audit sign-off - who decides "requested changes are made"? Splice maintainer review and recorded sign-off would close the self-attest gap.

It is mentioned above "The snapshot of the top 10 wallets will be taken on the last day of Q3 using public explorers.", is it Q3 or Q4 for M4?

Regarding M4, my opinion is that many of the top wallets and dApps will likely not use the SDK being developed here, as they have their own tech stack, and they are likely already implementing the CIP-0103 support. So the only motivation behind this milestone is that it is pushing the "organic"/ network-driven adoption; which would anyways happen on its own given some time. Now I am not sure that even if it is demonstrated that 80% adoption by the top has happened by Q3, how much that could be attributed to the SDK itself vs other factors. Nevertheless I don't have serious concerns about this point; if it can be demonstrated by Q3.

OTOH if the M4 is supposed to be Q4 end, then I have concerns. There is plenty of time till Q4 and its questionable how much it is simple organic adoption vs the work done as part of this grant.

@dfordivam we lock the top wallets and top dApps based on a snapshot at the end of Q3. That gives us a stable target for Q4 and lets us focus execution on a clear set of teams to add CIP-103 support. Otherwise, the set of "top" wallets and dApps could shift during Q4, which would make coordination and execution much harder.

On timing, we're already working with several wallets and dApps and expect early adoption as soon as possible. This is important because once wallets can interoperate with any dApp, it unlocks real network value. That said, Q4 also includes an external audit and the follow-up fixes. Based on our conversations, some teams may choose to align their full production rollout with the completion of that process, which could influence milestone timing.

It's hard to prove or enforce SDK usage. Teams can build their own Discovery Component while still using the dApp SDK primitives under the hood. That creates grey areas around what "using the SDK" actually means. Some teams, especially FI, may also treat the SDK as a reference and implement it internally for compliance reasons. Our goal is broader and faster adoption of CIP-103. We work with teams to get there, either by helping them implement the SDK or by supporting/guiding custom, compliant implementations

License? Section 4 places the work under the Splice umbrella but doesn't name a license. Apache-2.0 by convention?

This is a good suggestion. Docs and API specs are already in the repo. We'll share them on the forum to get feedback from dApps and wallets we haven't spoken to yet

M2 compliance test suite needs multi-implementer governance

The test suite will be open sourced in the same repository. It's a validation layer over the CIP-103 spec, not a new source of requirements. The intent is to encode what's already been approved, not to extend it. Anyone can run it and It should also be useful during development and release cycles to check compliance, not just for milestone validation

@0xBigBoss I agree in principle; my struggle is finding an alternative implementer who can commit to the timelines. So I think what you're suggesting is the standard we should strive for, but pragmatically, I'd prefer to move fast with implementation and incrementally move towards this standard. I also think it'll happen naturally as more teams start depending on CIP-103 and have skin in the game.

Fair point on the SDK usage attribution @joel-da . I concede that too difficult to prove in practice and agree that CIP-103 adoption is the right north-star metric and that's exactly what this SDK's job is.

I agree the alternative implementer commitment concern is real @shaul-da . Sigilry is shipping CIP-103 today via sigilry/sigilry (MIT, @sigilry/dapp@2.0.0-next.1 on npm) and is willing to engage as that alternative implementer – exercising the suite, surfacing spec ambiguities back to the CIP, and contributing within the hyperledger-labs/splice-wallet-kernel repo.

I believe two CIP-103 implementations exercising the same spec does multi-implementer governance organically.

We support this proposal. We've integrated the dApp SDK into Vala wallet, with a live deployment on Devnet and a mainnet rollout ready pending legal approval. https://dev.vala-wallet.cc/api/dapp/v1 (access gated for security reasons)

The integration was pretty straightforward. Our team got it working in a single workday also due to helpful documentation to accelerate the integration with AI support. The included sample dApps available for Devnet were a real strength of the tooling. We were able to validate connection flows end to end without having to stand up a counterparty ourselves. We see the SDK as a strong foundation for fast-tracking future app integrations on the wallet side. The main gap is the existing app support across the ecosystem but we understand that this is a major focus in this project. Continued investment in this work, paired with broader CIP-103 adoption across dApps, is what will let wallets and apps plug into each other quickly.

Methodology for Identifying Top Entities

To keep the measurement framework objective and transparent", top entities" are defined using verifiable on-chain activity.

Top dApps are the 15 applications that received the highest volume of network rewards over the trailing 90-day period.
Top wallets are the 10 wallet providers associated with the highest volume of network rewards over the trailing 90-day period.

These rankings are based on public data available through network explorers. For each Adoption Progress Report, we will take a snapshot of the current top entities at the end of the relevant milestone period. This ensures the target list stays aligned with the most active participants in the network.

Hi @joel-da, targeted design-partner question from #51, not a request to change this approved proposal.

I revised #51 from an indexer/PQS-adjacent proposal into Canton Participant Event Gateway: direct Ledger API ingestion, interface-aware event subscriptions, REST replay/event history, reliable webhooks, delivery audit, and party-scoped auth.

For the dApp SDK / wallet tooling path, would a participant-local gateway like this be useful as an app-backend pattern for event delivery and replay, separate from wallet connectivity itself? The intended value is to avoid every dApp team reimplementing Ledger API ingestion, checkpointing, webhook delivery, and party-scoped replay.

If you have a quick yes/no, or a concrete gap that would make it useful/not useful, a comment on #51 would help validate the app-facing scope.

Motivation & Rationale

The Challenge:

Without a standard, every application developer must build custom integrations for every wallet they want to support. This creates high barriers to entry and "vendor lock-in", where users are forced to use specific wallets just to access specific dApps. Furthermore, while the dApp API (CIP-0103) and the preview version dApp SDK successfully decoupled the Application Layer from the Connectivity Layer, realizing a truly unified network requires eliminating implementation friction for developers and ensuring strict, audited security for all type users.

Evidence of Demand and Ecosystem Alignment:

Recent Foundation research points to the integration bottleneck as one of the main barriers for dApp builders. Developers consistently highlighted the technical debt and operational overhead of building and maintaining custom wallet connectors. That work is costly, slows teams down, and makes it harder to scale. This proposal addresses those friction points directly. It also moves the network closer to the interoperability envisioned in CIP-0103, while reducing time to market for new decentralized applications.

Digital Asset is already working closely with the main drivers of network activity to make sure this tooling meets the needs of real production environments. We are in active technical discussions with many of the leading dApps and wallet providers in the ecosystem, and there is strong interest in a standardized implementation through this SDK. While we are not naming specific institutional partners or high-volume dApps in this public proposal, we are prepared to share that information privately with the Tech & Ops Committee to respect the private nature of these engagements. We can provide the current pipeline of engaged partners, the technical feedback gathered through early-access discussions, and the status of their integration plans. This gives the Committee the context needed to assess the strategic importance of the project while respecting the discretion of those ongoing engagements.

From day one, we have planned this SDK in close collaboration with ecosystem participants. Through ongoing validation with both retail and institutional partners, we have made sure the architecture reflects real-world security, compliance, and functional requirements from the start

The Rationale:

This investment funds the critical core engineering required to finalize the CIP-0103 ecosystem. Specification & Implementation

The requested allocation supports the work from Digital Asset to expand the CIP-0103 ecosystem. With the standard defined and approved, this phase focuses heavily on developing the core SDK and building the necessary testing frameworks. The implementation will be executed across the following core technical domains:

Core SDK Development: Engineering the foundational TypeScript/JavaScript SDKs that serve as the universal integration layer for Canton Network dApps. This involves building out the complete set of standard APIs for transaction building, state querying, synchronous and asynchronous signing flows to ensure developers have a production-ready toolkit.
Discovery Library: Developing open-source React/TypeScript UI components for universal wallet discovery. Add support for WalletConnect as a natively supported client.

This proposal covers the new work required to expand an existing production foundation into shared infrastructure for the broader ecosystem.

An early version of these SDKs and APIs were developed as a requirement for Wallet Gateway, which was needed for a key new partner coming into the ecosystem that, for obvious reasons, we cannot mention. That work established the foundation already in use today.

This proposal builds on that foundation to deliver a company-agnostic, ecosystem-standard SDK with broader wallet and dApp compatibility, continued UX and product refinement, and the security, compliance, and adoption support needed for wider use across the Canton Network.

Adoption Reporting
To provide the Committee with continuous visibility into ecosystem impact, we will track adoption of CIP-103 by top-tier dApps and Wallets. Adoption progress will be measured across three stages, and an updated Adoption Progress Report will be submitted as a required deliverable with every milestone.

Adoption Lifecycle:

Committed: The entity has formally agreed to adopt CIP-103.
Work-in-Progress: Active integration is underway using the SDK or Wallet Discovery components.
Compliant: The integration is complete, verified by the compliance test suite, and ready in production.

Standardized Wallet Discovery Library: Deliver an Open Source, turn-key, reusable library that enables dApps to achieve instant interoperability with all compliant wallets. This is a crucial market-acceleration feature designed to significantly reduce the time-to-market for dApp developers and lower adoption barriers.

Methodology for Identifying Top Entities

To keep the measurement framework objective and transparent", top entities" are defined using verifiable on-chain activity.

Top dApps are the 15 applications that received the highest volume of network rewards over the trailing 90-day period.
Top wallets are the 10 wallet providers associated with the highest volume of network rewards over the trailing 90-day period.

4. Maintenance

This proposal requests funding strictly for the activity required to execute the development of the dApp API and SDK and its defined milestones. It does not request funding for ongoing operational maintenance. Upon the successful completion of milestones, the day-to-day maintenance will seamlessly roll into the purview of the active 2026-Maintenance Grant for Wallet Kernel Open Source.

The infrastructure will continue to be maintained after delivery, with support for bug fixes, new wallet adapters, and feature enhancements needed to stay compatible with evolving browser standards and new wallet providers across the Canton Network.

The dApp SDK and connectivity tools are hosted in the Splice repository under Hyperledger Labs, giving the ecosystem a clear and transparent path to contribute through issues, feature requests, and pull requests. All contributions follow the same code quality, CI/CD, and security standards as the core codebase.

Operating under the Splice umbrella also ensures neutral, ecosystem-driven governance. These tools are intended as shared public infrastructure for the Canton Network, with oversight from the Tech & Ops Committee to support long-term alignment with CIP-103 and other foundational standards.

Budget Allocation:

The requested budget is intentionally concentrated on the work required to deliver usable, adoption-ready infrastructure.

Roughly 80% will support core product, engineering, and design efforts, including SDK and connectivity development, UX/UI design, partner collaboration on specifications and protocol evolution, and the hands-on support needed to enable adoption across wallets, dApps, and other ecosystem participants like WalletConnect.

The remaining 20% will cover security, external audit costs, and compliance work, including validation and tooling to ensure reliability and alignment with ecosystem standards.

Timeline Accountability & Risk Management

Volatility Stipulation: As this project is expected to be completed within 10 months, the grant is denominated in fixed Canton Coin, and the proposer assumes price volatility risk.
Acceleration Bonus: If all final Q4 2026 deliverables (Milestones 3 & 4) are met, audited, and approved 30 days prior to the Estimated Delivery date, a +5% bonus on the final payout will be awarded.
Late Penalty: For every 30 days of delay beyond the estimated delivery dates for any milestone, the payout for that specific milestone will be reduced by 5%, capped at a maximum 20% penalty per milestone.

Co-Marketing

To accelerate the adoption of this standard across the Canton Network, the Foundation is requested to provide the following DevRel and co-marketing support:

Collaboration on educational and promotional content, which may include developer tools overview blogs and major milestone announcements (such as audit completions or the WalletConnect integration).
Hosting and promoting virtual or in-person workshops demonstrating how builders can interact with the Reference dApp and utilize the new Discovery library.
